The Gerber Baby contest has been around since 2010, with hundreds of thousands of applicants each year. The winner receives $50,000 and their baby becomes the official 2018 Gerber Spokesbaby. This year over 140,000 photos were submitted but Lucas’ heartwarming smile caught the judges’ eye and he became the first ever baby with Down Syndrome to win!

Little Lucas is from Dalton, Georgia and his mother Cortney didn’t plan on entering him in the contest at all. Apparently a family member convinced her and she submitted his photo to the contest on a whim. She was truly shocked to find out he had won, and has since embraced his newfound fame. She hopes that this will help Lucas grow up to be proud of himself and never ashamed of his disability.

The Potential to Change the World

“We hope this opportunity sheds light on the special needs community and educates people that, with acceptance and support, individuals with special needs have the potential to change the world – just like our Lucas,” his mom said.

“He may have Down Syndrome, but he’s always Lucas first,” she said.

Just look at that face – no wonder he won that contest!

The Warrens say they are excited for this honor, but they also hope people will love him for who he is: Lucas is funny, outgoing and caring. His parents say he always knows when someone is not feeling well and he’ll come up and give you a big kiss.

His title of 2018 Gerber Baby also comes with a prize of $50,000 which the Warrens say will go toward Lucas’ future education.
